Does the sterile environment of the
gym or the Stairmaster you pull out
from under your bed once a week - really
help you realize your fitness goals? Maybe
you could use another option, one that
doesn’t require expensive equipment or
yearly gym memberships. Why not make
use of the very accessible, natural, green
environment around you?
What better way to get fit than out
in nature, using the trees, the rocks and
the sand to exercise, soaking up the sun
that gives you the vitamin D your body
requires. When using the environment in
your exercise program, we’re talking about
pull-ups on branches, push-ups off rocks
and running on the sand, which is a lot
different than running on streets and sidewalks.
You never know what exercises you
are going to do and how you will be doing
them as one of Coach Shannon Paul’s
recruits said during a customized Long
Beach Adventure Boot Camp.

This time last year, Lori
Woods of Signal Hill was
unhappy about her workout
routine, or rather her lack
of one.
“I was just turning 42 and
depressed that I wasn’t doing
anything,” says Woods.
This year, however, on her
43rd birthday, she was one of
the more than 20,000 participants
that crossed the finish
line at the L.A. Marathon.
When Woods, a mother of
four, saw an ad for the Long
Beach Adventure Boot Camp
for Women last October, she
decided not only was she out
of shape, she was out of
excuses.

Left, left, left, right, left… those are the chants you’d expect to hear at a boot camp, but for the women who participate in Long Beach adventure boot camp, “be all you can be” has a whole new meaning.
They meet each weekday at 5:30 AM near 7th Str. and Park in Long Beach, where they hear chants of motivation and enjoy a unique, outdoor exercise experience.
“For a lot of women this is the only hour they have for themselves, so I’m here to make it the best” said Shannon Paul, fitness instructor and boot camp owner.
