STRESS is like a 4 letter word for many, but it doesn’t have to be!

STRESS is like a 4 letter word for many, but it doesn’t have to be!

Stress is an indicator of fight or flight in dire situations. However on a day to day basis it is that nag in your mind and body. Sweaty palms, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, anxiety, loss of sleep, over and under eating are part of the signs. Are you aware and connected to the signs your body is telling you?

Becoming aware is the first step. Listen to your body. If you are having some of the symptoms above do you ignore them and keep on moving along? Or do you address them? We as humans are great adapters. We are chameleons with the environment, we adapt to our surroundings so well that we don’t even notice.

I want you to try something:

Ask yourself these 3 questions…..get out a piece of paper and start writing down your responses.

1.    What are the stressors in your life? Good or bad stressors.

a.     Good Stress: Getting married, a new job, a new baby etc.

b.     Bad Stress: We all know what those are! Anything that makes you a bit uncomfortable….Don’t say Boot Camp…haha

2.    How do you currently deal with those stressors?

a.     List out how you are currently dealing with your stressors

b.     Is your method working for you? Or against you?

   i.     Eg: eating, wine, yelling, yoga, massage

3.    How would you like to deal with those stressors?

a.     Think of a positive way that you can deal with your stressors.

   i.     Eg: Find a quiet space to regain clarity, surf, exercise, call a friend, create a plan of attack.

Stress in its ultimate form can be linked to certain types of cancers. Which is no surprise. The stress that we feel in our body is a physiological response. Remember the symptoms that we listed above….those are all a physiological response to stress in the body.

What are ways to alleviate stress?

a.     Exercise – That means get to Boot Camp ;) 1 hour of vigerous exercise can alleviate your stress for the hour and much longer.

b.     Healthy Eating – If you are putting the proper nutrients in your body you will have the energy, attention and focus to deal with your stressors.

c.      Meditation – Is very helpful for our busy minds. Try and make some time in your day to sit in a quiet space. Sometimes just finding peace and quiet can help bring claridy to your life and stressors.

d.     Being Proactive – Now that you are aware of your stressors, develop a plan of how to get through, or around your stress.

Remember you are ultimately in charge of how you react or respond to your stressors! Take charge of those stressors before they take charge of you!
